Acupuncture: Stress relief, Weight Loss

Updated: Oct 5, 2021

As stated in the previous Acupuncture blog post, which you can find here, the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine states that acupuncture treats the body by promoting movement of Qi in the body. This energy treatment helps treat:

  • Fatigue

  • Immune System Deficiencies

  • Chronic Pain Management

  • Headaches

Stress and Anxiety

Acupuncture has become a popular alternative holistic treatment to anxiety and stress.

Acupuncture releases hormones like endorphins to help relax the body, increasing relaxation hormones like serotonin and decreasing stress hormones like cortisol. There is a shift from our fight or flight, the sympathetic nervous system, into the parasympathetic system: our rest and digest system.

Acupuncture increases "happy" hormones and can also encourage the release of:

  • Serotonin

  • Epinephrine

  • Dopamine

  • GABA: gamma aminobutyric acid (relaxation amino acid)

Acupuncture has also shown effects of decreasing symptoms associated with stress, such as:

  • Cortisol levels

  • Heart rate

  • Blood pressure

  • Anxiety

While there are mixed studies with how is acupuncture helpful in treating different types of anxiety, research shows that acupuncture does not have a negative effect on anxiety. It is important to continue an ongoing anxiety treatment when starting acupuncture, and do not consider stopping medications without speaking to your doctor first.

Weight Loss

There are many reasons why people become overweight: hormone imbalances, slowed metabolism, overeating, poor nutrition, or lack of exercise are the most common.

Acupuncture for weight control is based on the concept of weight gain occurs because of a problem of energy flow around the regulation center in the brain, the hypothalamus. It's responsible for controlling body temperature, circadian rhythm, thirst and hunger. Acupuncture is used to help supplement other weight loss strategies in patients.

Treatments are focused on improving eating habits and regulating the body:

  • Curbing appetite

  • Stopping cravings

  • Improving digestions

  • Regulating hormones

It is important to note that acupuncture is not a sole treatment for weight loss, but is usually used alongside a comprehensive weight loss plan including healthy diet and exercise.
